Led by Girls Rock MKE camp instructors and Executive Director Mary Joy Hickey, this session will explore songwriting fundamentals—structure, lyric writing, melody, and creative storytelling. Participants will engage in creativity exercises, write original songs, and reflect on their own voice and experience through music.

Ladies Rock 10-Year Anniversary Party
Milwaukee music-lovers are invited to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Girls Rock MKE’s Ladies Rock Camp with a rooftop party and rock show on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
Hailing from Milwaukee (now based in NYC), Abby Jeanne and the Shadowband will perform a celebratory set as part of a regional tour, along with a performance from Chicago supporting act The Knee-Hi’s and a reunion of beloved Milwaukee punk band Fox Face, who disbanded in 2022 and of which Hickey is the bassist. The all-ages event will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Radio Milwaukee Studios’ (220 E. Pittsburgh Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53204) unique rooftop space, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. The event is a benefit for Girls Rock MKE programs and will feature a silent auction. Find Your Kuumba with The New State
Girls Rock MKE and The New State are proud to present “Find Your Kuumba,” a vibrant afternoon of music, art, and community at Kuumba Coffee & Juice’s (274 E Keefe Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53212) outdoor space in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood.
This free, all-ages event takes place Saturday, August 2 from 12–4PM, featuring performances by local bands, a community open mic, DJs, and youth musicians from Girls Rock MKE programs. Attendees will enjoy an array of artist vendors, food and beverages from Kuumba, and interactive and educational activities, including live sound, stage management, and DJ mentorship and a community art project.

Milwaukee Youth Idol with School of Rock
We’re thrilled to announce Milwaukee Youth Idol — a brand new event celebrating young voices in our city! Presented by Girls Rock MKE in partnership with School of Rock Shorewood, this high-energy live competition invites youth to take the stage and sing their hearts out in front of a live audience along to a chosen music track. This inaugural event marking a collaborative partnership between School of Rock Shorewood and Girls Rock MKE aims to to promote creativity and empowerment for young musicians through new youth music events and community opportunities.

Who can participate: Youth vocalists (ages 8-18)
How it works: Think American Idol, but Milwaukee style! Performers will sing 1 minute of a chosen song for our panel of judges, including Gaby from REYNA, Cris Siqueira (Co-owner of Lion's Tooth Bookstore and singer of Spidora), Joey Turbo, Ken at Dirtnap Records, and Lexi Smith (Opera singer with UWM Florentine).

Jam House is more than an open mic with a live backing band; it is a vibrant community space where musicians and artists of all skill levels collaborate to create original music together. Girls Rock MKE ft. at Grace Weber's Music Lab: March 28th Session
Grace Weber’s Music Lab is a FREE monthly music and arts education program for greater Milwaukee area middle and high school students, presented by HYFIN, a Radio Milwaukee station. At The Music Lab, students have the opportunity to learn about the music and entertainment industries through featured guests. They are also given the opportunity to collaborate, perform, and build relationships with their peers.
On Friday, March 28th, during International Women’s Month, Girls Rock Milwaukee will be Grace Weber’s Music Lab featured guest.
Attendees are invited to sign up for limited spots in the Teen Open Mic. Students ages 13-18 can sign up to take the Radio Milwaukee stage (singers, rappers, musicians, poets, & more - this means YOU!). Young artists will be invited to share their musical gifts, gain performance experience, & receive support & feedback from our featured guest of the month, along with our Lab Director & student audience members.
*NOTE: Teen Open Mic slots are limited & filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must RSVP & register beforehand to participate & open mic list will close once slots are filled or by noon the day before Lab at the latest.

Calling all Girls Rock teens! Join Girls Rock MKE Executive Director Mary Joy and the Milwaukee Rep's Teen Council for a FREE dinner and a ticket to Marie and Rosetta, the electrifying musical story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Marie Knight as influential women in rock history!
This event is entirely FREE for teens! Join us before the show for a pre-show reception with free food, and stick around after the show for a panel on Successful Black & Brown Women in the Workplace!

In 1979, artist Judy Chicago completed her famous feminist installation piece titled The Dinner Party, featuring 39 mythical and historical women with a goal of preventing the forgetting of women's contributions to the world. Girls Rock MKE invites you to join our modern day Dinner Party to benefit our Girls Rock and Ladies Rock camp programs, which empower individuals of marginalized identities and diverse experiences through music education and performance.
This inspiring culinary experience will feature FIVE courses from five of Milwaukee's top women and non-binary chefs. More information and full menu coming soon, but don't wait to grab your seat at the table - this intimate dinner is capped at 60 attendees.

Uncharted follows a group of women who are inspired to break into the music industry by attending a songwriting camp held by Alicia Keys and her organization, She is the Music. This film offers an intimate look through the lens of Black and Brown creatives and the challenges they face when all odds are against them.

Girls Rock MKE @ Beet Street Festival
This year’s Beet Street is happening on October 7th!
The family-friendly celebration takes over the block of S. Wentworth Ave. between Potter (Goodkind) and Russell (Cactus). Bay View Historical Society, abolitionists, high school art clubs, environmental justice organizers, voter registrants, and LGBTQ+ resources all have a presence. We uplift the intersections of art and movement building.
There is a punk rock rummage sale, maker market, face painting, a juried pie contest “The Great Midwestern Pie Championship” at Palomino, a photo booth, a music video showcase that screens in the live room of the club, and delicious seasonal refreshments and libations.
